Fishing
Longmont is a fisherman’s haven with opportunities year-round for rod, fly, and ice fishing in the winter.
Union Reservoir is fast becoming one of Colorado's finest Walleye fisheries. Walleye 17 to 24 inches are common. In recent years, Union Reservoir has become the hotspot for fly fishermen who enjoy the thrill of catching the hard-fighting Carp. In addition, a healthy population of trout, crappie, catfish, bass, sunfish, wiper and tiger muskie provide a quality fishing experience. Fishing is available along the majority of the shoreline or from a boat. Colorado fishing regulations are enforced, and a fishing license is required. A fish cleaning station and handicapped-accessible fishing pier are provided for your convenience.
Lagerman Agricultural Preserve boasts some of the best warm-water fishing around. You can find black crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, walleye and largemouth bass.
McIntosh Lake offers shore fishing, and limited boat access is allowed. Anglers can expect to catch carp, catfish, walleye, and crappie.
St. Vrain State Park is a perfect destination for anglers, campers, birders, photographers, and just about anyone who enjoys nature. A total of 10 ponds offer angling for rainbow trout, bass, crappie, perch, bluegill, walleye, catfish, and more.
Pella Crossing Open Space is located just outside Longmont in Hygiene, CO and offers world-class fishing. It is a wetland habitat that supports aquatic plant and animal life and lures in large numbers of migrating bird species. Fishing ponds include Heron Lake, Sunset, Poplar, Dragonfly and Clearwater Ponds. Species of fish range from black crappie, bluegill and channel catfish to large and smallmouth bass, yellow perch and rainbow trout!
Izaak Walton Park is home to a 15.7-acre pond, which is managed as a recreational fishery for the exclusive use of children. Adults are encouraged to help kids fish, but they must preserve this special spot for children. Naturally reproducing fish contained in the pond include largemouth bass, black crappie, black bullheads, bluegills, green sunfish and carp. The program stocks catchable rainbow trout in the spring and catchable channel catfish in the early summer.
The north St. Vrain Creek near Button Rock Preserve in Lyons provides excellent fly-fishing opportunities for anglers. Brown trout are abundant in the river's shallows and pools. Fishing along the river and at Longmont Reservoir is within easy walking distance from the entrance.
