Wibby Brewing Wins International Awards

Longmont’s Wibby Brewing won two prestigious awards at the 2018 Frankfurt International Trophy in Germany. One of Wibby’s flagship beers, Lightshine Helles, won Grand Gold in the Helles Lager category, earning one of the highest distinctions in German beer awards and collecting its second gold medal overall. In addition to this high honor, Volksbier Vienna, one of the brewery’s seasonal beers, won Silver in the Red or Amber Lager category.

More than 400 beers competed across 60 categories in the Frankfurt International Trophy this year, according to the festival. Frankfurt International Trophy, in line with most German beer festivals, awards bronze, silver, gold and grand gold medals. Wibby Brewing joins Sierra Nevada Brewing Company as the only American brewers to win Grand Gold at the 2018 competition.

Lightshine Helles is a light, sweet finishing, Bavarian influenced lager with 22 IBUs and 5.5% ABV.

“They will only give out a Grand Gold to beer they thought was the best they tasted in the competition for that style,” co-founder and brewmaster Ryan Wibby said. “That means German beer judges were so impressed with our Lightshine Helles, they believe it is the best helles lager they tasted in competition.”

Volksbier Vienna, one of the downtown Longmont brewery’s most popular seasonals, won Silver in the Red or Amber Lager category. It’s the first major award for one of Wibby Brewing’s seasonals. “It’s super encouraging that our Vienna lager is considered one of the best beers in this competition,” Wibby said.

This marks the second gold medal for Lightshine Helles. Last year, the flagship lager won Gold at the Copa Internacional de Cerveza Pura Vida Indie in Costa Rica. It also won Bronze in the Can Can Awards, which judges only canned beer. Another flagship beer, Moondoor Dunkel, won Silver at the 2017 Great American Beer Festival.
