“Crossings: Migration/Immigration/Transcendence” by Stephanie Hilvitz
Stephanie Hilvitz’s exhibition will run in the Main Gallery at the Firehouse Art Center from January 9 – 27, 2019. There will be a 2nd Friday reception on January 11 from 6 – 9 PM and an Artist Talk on January 23 from 6 – 7 PM. As the Artist Member of the Year, Stephanie Hilvitz uses three-dimensional constructions to combine historical and personal narrative with processes in the natural world, inspired by the migratory patterns of the monarch butterflies and the beautiful life giving milkweed pod.
The centerpiece of the exhibit will be a dress form of stitched pods, some with immigrant faces, some empty marked with an “X,” representing the unknown immigrant. She utilizes the symbolism of keriah/rend which is the ritualized expression of anguish that Hilvitz feels in conversation of both current times and troubling history.
The Firehouse Art Center is located in historic downtown Longmont at the corner of 4th Avenue and Coffman Street. They are open Wednesday through Sunday from noon-5 p.m. For more information, visit firehouseart.org.
