Intercambio Uniting Communities, a local non-profit, will share stories of friendship and success at a special photography exhibit at the Longmont Public Library, 409 4th Ave., throughout the month of June. This free exhibit is a testament of Intercambio’s impact on the local community.
Lasting friendships have been created through Intercambio’s work, and the photo exhibit will showcase the human connections that are built among people who might not have otherwise been given the opportunity to get to know one another. English education is the vehicle for sparking these connections, but the connections are deeper than language learning – they are truly a bi-directional cultural exchange.
Intercambio embraces a mission to improve immigrant lives through English education and to unite communities across cultures. The organization serves Boulder County with three offices: Longmont, Boulder and Lafayette. They offer volunteer-taught English classes for adult immigrants, as well as, classes and workshops on life skills and citizenship. Since 2001, Intercambio has served more than 10,000 immigrants with the help of more than 5,000 volunteers.
One of many ways in which Intercambio delivers on its mission is its Conversation Team activities. These structured social events allow community members to meet someone new while providing conversation practice for adult English language learners. Each event includes a volunteer training, followed by one-on-one conversation with students and a potluck. If you are interested in engaging with immigrants to broaden their community connections, please sign up for the June Conversation Team activities here.
