Ansel Adams: Early Works exhibit @ Longmont Museum. Exhibit runs Jan 26-May 26

The Ansel Adams: Early Works exhibit at the Longmont Museum focuses on the photographer’s masterful small prints taken earlier in his career, from the 1920s into the 1950s. By capturing the abject power of nature, Adams changed our understanding of landscape photography, solidifying it as a legitimate form of modern art. Artist in Residence Roberta Restaino @ Firehouse Art Center. Jan 30-March 2

Working in traditional printmaking and creative construction, Restaino will use her time in the Residency to work on her own invention: an imaginative take on historical catalogues of natural history she has named the Encyclopedia of the Anthropocene. “Anthropocene”—from anthropo, for “man,” and cene, for “new”—because human activities have caused mass extinctions of plant and animal species. The residency will culminate in an immersive exhibition of these creatures rendered into a three-dimensional environment, accompanied by shadow-box “specimens” and an interactive drawing. Visit Roberta in the South Gallery from November through January to add your own creativity to the construction. Supplies provided through the sponsorship of ACE Hardware Longmont.

Create Beauty Design Conference - Intimacy by Design: Exploring the Relationship of Plants and People @ Longmont Museum

Create Beauty Design Conference – the region’s premiere conference exploring the intersection of beauty, sustainability and biodiversity for outdoor spaces–will be held February 22-23, 2018 and will feature renowned designer and author Roy Diblik. Tickets are available for purchase at www.treeoflifelandscapes.com/create-beauty-conference.

The second annual Create Beauty Design Conference, an open to the community event produced by Tree of Life Landscapes, will be held at the Longmont Museum and is headlined by a discussion with Diblik on the subject of “Intimacy by Design: Exploring the Relationship of Plants and People.”

“We could not be more pleased to have Roy bring his wealth of knowledge to the Create Beauty Conference in February,” said Johnny Moore, Tree of Life designer and conference director. “The conference this year will be a great community event – whether you are learning the basics of how to use plants in your backyard or you are a seasoned professional with years of design or installation experience; there will be something for everyone.”

The two days of festivities will kickoff at 7:00 p.m., February 22 with a screening of the film Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf at the Academy Boulder at 970 Aurora Ave., Boulder, CO. Five Seasons is an exploration of the gardens and approach taken by contemporary Dutch landscape designer Piet Oudolf, best known for his work on the High Line in New York City as well as at Millennium Park in Chicago. The trailer for Five Seasons is available here.

The following day the conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Conference attendees will hear Diblik draw from four decades of experience growing perennials as he discusses the intimate relationships between plants, design, and people as well as discuss his own design process; from planting and mulching to maintaining sustainable growth. Diblik is known for work on at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Shed Aquarium and his partnership with Piet Oudolf. Diblik is the owner of Northwind Perennial Farm and author of The Know Maintenance Garden.

Other speakers include Denver Botanic Gardens horticulturalist, Kevin Williams, discussing matrix seed mix planting techniques to create self-sustaining, hyper-naturalistic landscapes.
