Downtown Longmont Launches Expanded Outdoor Space: Bigger Hearts. Stronger Streets.

July 2020 – The Longmont Downtown Development Authority (LDDA) has launched
“Bigger Hearts. Stronger Streets.” in Downtown Longmont. The Bigger Hearts, Stronger Streets campaign encompasses a lane closure on Main Street to allow for additional space for business, seating, walking, biking, events, dining, etc. between July - September, 2020.

The closure will allow restaurants and retailers to expand outdoor dining and shopping opportunities for visitors while maintaining space to social distance. The expanded outdoor area will have mural and artwork installations, Tivoli lighting and plenty of umbrellas, tables and more. Main street will become a transformed “pedestrian mall” and will allow space to have gatherings and meetings while adhering to social distancing protocols.

As part of its certified Colorado Creative District designation, LDDA will also be partnering with ArtWalk to enhance this area throughout the summer with their weekly event titled “Summer on the Streets” featuring local artists, live music, markets and more.

“The community has asked for Main Street to be a pedestrian mall for years. With the Governor’s Can Do Community Challenge, we feel this is an innovative way to reuse public spaces and help businesses thrive in a world of social distancing,” said Kimberlee McKee, LDDA’s executive director. “Based on public health recommendations and consumer confidence, increased outdoor options enhance the safety and comfort of the community and expands the way we do business in Longmont.”
